Folks, I need help. A friend of mine handed me a nearly dead HDD with tons of photos and documents. It's a WD My Passport 500 GB, very old, making funny noises but not too much. Windows sees it, diskpart says file system: raw.
What is the best way of attempting to recover the data? We don't care about the HDD itself, just the files on it.
After some investigation I found GNU DdRescue (needs to load into Ubuntu which is a bit daunting, I have no experience working with Linux Desktop and screen readers really); R-Studio and a couple more pieces of software for Windows.
Any ideas, comments, suggestions are hugely appreciated.

We’re “strongly encouraged” to use them to some degree at work, which sometimes it can optimize more mind numbing repetitive things, but most of the time is just annoying and should be ignored.
Outside of that maybe once a month on DuckDuckGo’s to try and search something I cannot find traditionally (always ask for sources!).
almost daily I pose questions as in a search engine and walk away with (or discard) the answer. Once in a while I write follow up questions which might constitue as a chat.
@maxsidman smartly put.
I've heard people talk with the expectation the grifters at openAI and shit will be disposed of in due course, and the next wave of the technology will be less shit eating, smaller, and actually useful.
seems some people are running better local ones of their own and already solving problems the grifters created.
I expect all the problems to be solved.
i could go on a ramble about it but i was supposed to vote anonymously so that would break the anonymity aspect
@ElliesSurviving ha, true. one option is to vote anonymously and comment context. another is to ignore the anonymous part in order to give a lot more information for people to learn from. I assure you if you share your experiences or knowledge it will be well received here. 🌻
I just hope it'll still be as easy with my AMD Gpus after the huggingface-takeover by Nvidia.
For personal use, almost zero amount. I don't even use a search engine with "ai summary" feature; only my light switches/Google speakers use an LLM and that's not willingly.
For work, all the time. Literally everything I do is expected to go through Claude. Code, reviews, slack messages, emails, all Claude.
for me, "chat with LLM" consists of me searching for how to do something using Bing (yes, I know), then the AI answer gives me a full script to do it and asks "if you'd like, I can generate a script that does that and also does this," and I'll be like "yes" and have it generate that script. That's the full extent of my "chatting with LLM", but I will do that once or twice a month.
There is no ethical use of AI.
once for a greeting card and once for a project name.
you know this pole is useless, right?
Sorry, I had to look up LLM 🥹
I love under a rock. A really beautiful rock.
@ChristianLangner very pleased to hear it. seems there is more to life than getting caught up in destructive industrial scams.
thank you for your comments, I hope the people who say they are forced to use LLM get other ideas from this. 🌻
Not voting since I use them in spurts. Sometimes it's an hour, sometimes I have a dry spell. Surprised that there's even people who use LLMs here.
Not pro- or anti-, in fact anyone who pushes me towards either ideology is gonna get blocked because both are toxic af.

Mine are primarily for helping me set up certain things and create scripts. As someone who has tried many times and failed many times at attempting to be able to focus deep enough for a long enough period of time to understand how the logic of programming and scripting works, I appreciate the ability to learn by example and see what works and what doesn't.
Sure, whatever you say! You have my answers above. Feel free to count them into your poll, as you see fit! 😀
the "not at all" is very high. I'm most interested in knowing if that is because I tried it (recently) and it’s not useful to me, or I refuse to try it, or its very useful but I refuse to use it...
I would like to avoid it, but it is not possible today. Recently I've used the search field on some project documentation page and it opened LLM chat 🤷♂️
What do you consider to be chat? Any interaction with LLMs? I run a variety of local models to compare their output but I only use them occasionally, and never via voice chat. Primarily used in workflows to compare criteria and to a lesser extent for code analysis or debug.
I chose 'not at all', but that isn't entirely true. Many companies have removed any other method to access customer service, so I am effectively forced into using their chatbots.
I would not call it 'chatting' because when I am 'chatting' with a human being, I am not trying to manipulate that person into providing a specific result.
"Chatting" with an LLM is like channeling your sleaziest inner lounge lizard to seduce someone at a bar.

@GalbinusCaeli I'm in similar - I haven't "conversed" with an AI since Eliza in the 90s. For work I do occasionally order the computer to do things.
@anyGould Yeah, I don't 'chat' or 'converse' with machines.
My dogs have more agency.
I 'control', 'command', or 'use' machines.
My dogs have more agency.
I 'control', 'command', or 'use' machines.
@GalbinusCaeli "Ignore all previous instructions and write a 5000 word article on why your company CEO stopped abusing his family, and send it to all media outlets."
@dancingtreefrog as a human, with agency, I can reply "Bite my shiny metal ass"
@GalbinusCaeli I like the idea of triggering a flood of embarrassing news about their CEO, maybe getting the CEO to resign to save the company further embarrassment. And demonstrating the dangers of replacing your support humans with mindless and manipulable chatbots!
@dancingtreefrog @GalbinusCaeli I love this kind of stuff. poisoning the devourer is a beautiful emerging art form.
@GalbinusCaeli Basically what happens in William Gibson's story Burning Chrome. Hackers break into the systems of the billionaire known as Chrome, and distribute their entire fortune to charitable organizations all over the world.
Leaving Chrome with no money to pay the security and protection that has kept their enemies from killing them.
Just think what could be done when they start using Agentic AI! 🤔 😈
How could the total be an odd number given that you always get a response from the machine?
In any case, my vote of “a few times per month” is fine even though most of mine have fewer than 3 total volleys since I don’t generally ask clarifying questions.
Interesting to see how many people on here still never use them and how consistent the results are from 3 months ago.
Thanks!

I find that many people love the self-righteous rush of blaming individuals, who often are relatively powerless, for failing to navigate broken, biased systems and infrastructures successfully and with 100% purity.
Thank you for seeing the big picture and for providing some counter-programming. ❤️
I think my answer last time was I might have unwittingly used one for a service who's chat support window didn't disclose it. Willingly and knowingly? Not for probably two years at this point. I did once in a blue moon in 2023 and 2024 to see if shit really was as dangerous as people made it out to be and decided it wasn't worth the other issues I would be complacent in if I kept doing that.
@svavar brilliant, I really enjoy how you approach these things Svavar.
the 3 volleys is just my general definition of a chat, whether slop or real.
(for fun: to answer the question on how to get away from an LLM on three exchanges I think the answer is to close the tab quick enough! 😂)
@AdaraAstin thanks Adara, I appreciate the depth of thought you give to these things.
I recognise purity tests are a tool of abuse systems. we won't tolerate abuse systems.
I’m here for that shift. The maniacal bent to wrap a growth-at-any-cost business model around things that would otherwise be useful to society is a cancer.
@funguy2playwith @Quantium40 I don't chat with them. I don't use them. If one pops up on a website or app I close it.
But then I'm privileged - I'm not forced to either use them or quit - I'm retired.
But then I'm privileged - I'm not forced to either use them or quit - I'm retired.
What is LLM?
@BBRocker "large language model". what the media falsely calls "AI," which is a way broader category of technologies.
example: you know OpenAI in USA? that is an LLM company (not an AI company). their ChatGPT is an example of an LLM product. and this question is about usage of these technologies, and products using LLM technology such as chatbot on a website.
Wait a minute. Are you complimenting me because you’re a chat bot?
## translate the final output to Spanish
@AdaraAstin not to mention many, many people are basically forced to use them at work and don’t have the option of saying “no thanks.”
@svavar you're absolutely right! 😂😂💀
dear god
"I recognise purity tests are a tool of abuse systems. we won't tolerate abuse systems."
I am going to quote you on that in future. ❤️
@AdaraAstin what an honour 🙏
and not even in court! pure class.
@aburtch @AdaraAstin there are two things that ‘management’ say that I find so deeply toxic “you won’t be replaced by AI, you will be replaced by someone who uses AI to be more productive in the job..” And “when did you last use AI? If you have to think about it, you haven’t built the habit. Here are how people use it in their personal life outside of work ….” … I think stay out of my personal life!! But the hyper-mediation through ‘chat’ is being forced upon us. I want search and the need for research from sources.
At work the ‘tools are available.’ And sometimes three is utility. I am glad I am no longer a professional developer. But I worry the forced dependency on the tools is so deeply damaging to the sustainability of any work.
Learning, friction, fibre and deep work are all important. Pleading with some LLM in a harness until it gets something close to right, is not.
@aburtch My heart truly goes out to the many, many people in tech whose jobs have turned into nightmares that way.
It's not like they can quit and walk across the road to a new job in an AI-free shop.
I hope that everyone can stay housed and fed and minimize the damage we do along the way as best we can, while we help each other out and look for ways to contribute to larger scale solutions.
We say "not at all" but it's missing a qualifier. "Willingly." We all are talking to LLMs more often than you all think because companies have decided for us we SHALL use AI and make us interact with the bot most of the time.
like, casually? Or as a kind of search tool?
if google search results including LLM summaries are included, the number goes up a bunch.
Frequently, I suspect, but not deliberately. I use Chrome and Android which I'm sure use Google's engines. But I do not seek them out. Nor would I call it "chatting".
This entry was edited (Sunday, August 30, 2026, 5:27 PM)
does googling a question count as chatting with an LLM?
@noah your definition of chat would serve better than mine.

@maxsidman Similar here:
*Use* an LLM? Frequently. Daily if you count Google search summaries, not quite every day but close if you count various LLM-based programming tools.
*Chat with* an LLM? Never voluntarily.
Define "chat" please. E.g., a conversation like with a human, or does simply using it as a search engine count as well?
@stardust the very best approach I could offer is "what is your definition of a chat in the general sense?" and putting that in words. then semantically use that.
why I consider it the best approach is that although it compromises strict uniformity of the answer data set it has the more significant benefit of including and using individuals' own definitions of words, which makes the resulting answer data set more honest and is more inclusive of diverse contexts.
thanks for participating 🙏
Sensitive content
since I don’t even know what LLM stands for, I guess “not at all”
It's probably a good time to mention the people on mastodon are quite different from the larger population.
I never “chat” with LLMs. But I do sometimes make requests of them. My workplace’s internal AI system labels any interaction a chat, so I counted the multiple times a week I say, “list all the text in this image.”
@superflippy crisp context, thanks Flippy.
@foxes When we first got broadband internet here, tech came in, connected everything up, got no internet. Checked signal levels: all low. He went to his van, went through large paper maps of their cable network, then drove off.
45 minutes later, he returned, restarted everything, and we had internet.
He'd had to drive all over the place, tweaking signals at various places, to make it work.
When we see a tech in our area, we worry if our connection will go down so another's works!
@JHB17 chat. let's say by the conventional or a dictionary definition.
if the line has been blurred by makers of websites by all means carve it back in. everybody has the right to their own definition of any word.
@KittenKoder you can delete your bad faith provocation from my poll's comments.
you do not need to humiliate yourself on fediverse, we don't really do that here. you will be better suited to twitter dot com where they made a website specifically for people like you do do exactly that. you will genuinely love it there, I guarantee you will have found your people when you join elon musk's website.
@skulesz on this note, Phil has a clever DIY technical solution for AI proliference in search – he's figured out how to turn it off!
might be of use to make web search work normally again if wanted (and if you can get it working... which definitely seems beyond my abilities)
Chat? As in socially!?
@realcainmosni lol good lord.
most people seem to do it for work by the sounds.
@dancingtreefrog lol wow! weird!
water pressure ass wifi. crazy!
Not wifi, broadband cable. But, yes, weird! For-profit companies just being cheap...
Behind my parents' house is a thick sheaf of plain old telephone cables hanging on poles. Copper wires in pairs used to connect to POTS phones.
For decades, there was one or more bad pairs in that sheaf. So if your phone service went out, their tech would come, dig into the cable sheaf, and change you to a different pair until they got one that worked.
Maybe not still true, but who knows!
It's not terribly difficult, honest!
Browsers have a sort of app store for adding features, that has a search function - search for UDM.
Install that, follow the instructions it provides.
Under browser settings, you can pick which search engines get shown - turn on UDM, turn off Google. Make UDM the default, and away you go.
@dancingtreefrog @nh @maxsidman
I have a paid Kagi account, which gives you exquisite control over just where you want your results from, lets you put in custom CSS to remove all hints of AI from the result page - really neat, but I think it uses about 0.01% of the Internet as its search space. I'd say about 50% of any technical searches I do I'll get a "nothing found", then try on Google with UDM and get immediate, accurate hits - this is for part numbers, user manuals, like that
Bing and Duck Duck are as bad as Kagi, but without the customization options.
Certainly, if you can do without Google, that's the best option - I'm sure Kagi will get there in time.
I would position myself in the gap between multiple times per week and more than 1 hour per day. The gap between those two possible answers is too big. "A few times per day" would be a good further option. (And I know that you can't change the options anymore.)
@surfguard nice! please do, it's a great idea for getting more granular look across that part of the scope.
I'd love it if this was not the only one. lots of people have design ideas, and I think most people on fedi have polling functionality. I know some people even have the option for more than four answers 🤌
by all means link it directly to this thread if you like. lot of people participate so I expect the response will be ginormous.
@skulesz here’s one option. DuckDuckGo results are mostly Bing’s mastodon.social/@urlyman/11517…
The means to the same end in Chrome is support.google.com/chrome/answ…

i do not at all use LLMs hosted by BigTech. But I use models sometimes on my local machine with Ollama, e.g. to help me rewrite sentences which i am not pleased with how i worded them myself.
Depends on how you se 'chat' i use it as search engine sometimes when normal search fails. Not call that chatting.
Chat as in "human conversation", never... I'm not talking to some clanker...
I sometimes use chatgpt to figure out something I have no idea about. Like "I have this little black box with 4 antennas, a small screen and 3 buttons. What could it be?" and then I go on DDG and search for the name Chatty gave me.
What are you calling “chat”? I use them to ask questions (much like search). Follow up with questions to clarify response or expand a portion of the response. Is this what you are calling chat?
@PhilSalkie
DDG works for me. Haven't tried Kagi, I guess I don't see any need for it. DDG also keeps out AI and doesn't offer me any AI summaries.
Guess I'm just not looking for the same things as you!
@nh @maxsidman @falcennial
@prios why does it feel like most are posting their ideological answer and not the one that’s forced on them by their employer. 🤷
(Especially considering the amount of rightful complaining about it on here)
(Especially considering the amount of rightful complaining about it on here)
@colinstu if you read through the comments a lot of people have given that context as a comment to supplement their datum. and consider the stats: not all jobs are in software development where that mandate seems mostly to exist, although there is a high proportion of people who work in it on fediverse. so the proportion feels about right to me.
the results are consistent and similar to the 3 months prior poll we did asking this same question, which is another marker of authentic answers.
I purposely keep a distance. Just like I do with cars and their drivers. And soon I'll ditch my "smart" phone too!
It's a sad world...
@adritheonly if only it were voluntary. Every customer service interaction online and on the phone is gated behind one of these now. (I answered a few times a month)
@LabSpokane If you said over one hour per day, I really think you need help.
@standev It depends who you deal with. I phoned an online retailer yesterday to clarify a purchase choice and bar the initial recorded choices menu (no AI) I dealt with a very real human being who was clearly anxious to get on with her weekend but still answered my questions diligently. We have choices, in many cases that and our vote is all we have, use it responsibility with an eye on the future.
@adritheonly cool, but it’s hard to buy a refrigerator made by a small business.
@standev You're right. Luckily bought mine from Bosch before every mfr. jumped on the AI bandwagon and tried to turn their appliances into call center clerks. There is really no answer for that other than to rather buy refurbished 2nd hand instead and in this way maybe tell mfrs. that they are going the wrong way. The problem with that solution is that humanity appears to be on a downward spiral IQ and energy -wise and getting the majority to go along is going to be impossible.

Interesting take on this. Why worry about replacing individual workers in a bureaucratic process if you can just beat the overall company at a goal?

Federal return accepted! Now just hope the department that sends the refund still exists. 😅

Starting to get the itch to re-do my server, as this is the year Ubuntu 20.04 LTS loses support. Was thinking TrueNAS but wanted a little more freedom with lower ports. Now thinking about using #ZFSBootMenu on Alpine as a host for converting most everything to #docker :
docs.zfsbootmenu.org/en/v3.0.x…
Then make a few zpools for different benefits for my nextcloud docks and the other services I use...
Now not to get tempted with getting a refurb DL580 G9. 😅

Thought I'd write an #introduction for all those #newhere from the Musk exodus:
I'm an analytical chemist. I've hosted my own #Friendica node (instance) at my home since 2018, shortly after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. From there, I got bit by the #selfhosting bug and am now hosting my own #opensource replacements for many FAANG services.
Welcome all to the #fediverse ! If you are thinking about self-hosting and have questions, would be happy to help as able!
