Refuse to provide clicks but #Mastodon and the rest of the #fediverse seem to be the exact opposite of crumbling to me.

i have opened registration on animal.church for all friendly anticapitalists, vegetarian/vegans, queer people, or anyone in the immediate orbit of these topics. boost appreciated. #mastadmin #fediverse #vegan #instanceadmin

My #fediverse ( #diaspora #mastodon #pixelfed ) running on the BeOS inspired alt-OS Haiku :) (and federating over #activitypub between PixelFed and Mastodon to boot)...I could have been coding but I'd rather dork around today with altos etc #computer #geek #haikuos #beos

Finally created my first #pixelfed post. More and more improvement to the #fediverse ever day. Big thanks to @dansup https://pixelfed.social/p/hankg/32493

My Little Corner Of the Internet - Progress So Far...

All this on my 2 core 12gb ram VPS with 50gb SSD - although I may upgrade that to 100gb at some point.

Email
Bye Bye #Gmail... I have my own mail server, using K-9 Mail as a client on my phone, and the Nextcloud IMAP app on the web.

Website
I used to host my hillexplorer.com outdoors blog on shared hosting. Considering it's now on a not too expensive #VPS with various other apps, it's still much faster than it ever was on shared hosting - largely thanks to the Varnish caching system I installed.

File Storage
Bye Bye Google Drive. #Nextcloud is a much sleeker system and I'm rather loving it. I may not get as much storage space but, let's be honest, I never needed all that anyway! Mainly used for documents, compressed personal photos, and compressed personal videos that I can share with family. The original files are stored the old fashioned way.... on my hard drive and backed up to USB pens.

Google Docs
I'm now running my own instance of #Collabora Office on my server for editing my documents whilst out and about - integrated nicely with Nextcloud

Chat
#Prosody XMPP installed on my server and Conversations used as a client on the phone. Gajim on the PC. I don't currently use any other chat app.

Photo Gallery (public)
I used to use #Flickr for all my outdoors galleries for the walks I did. I'm now in the process of migrating them to #Piwigo at https://gallery.hillexplorer.com. I was a bit worried at first that it was going to look ugly but managed to find a nice theme.

Social Networking
#Friendica - the best option for me at the moment as I don't really want to cut off either Diaspora or Mastodon. It's a nice interface too and the mobile apps seem to be coming on well. #DiCa is my choice app at the moment. If only I could get this annoying embed problem sorted...

Music
Bye bye Google Music. I'm finding the Music app in Nexcloud works well and I have it linked up to the CloudBeats app on my phone.

Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc
All on Nextcloud and synced up nicely to my Android and my Ubuntu PC. Easy.

Future Stuff

Well... if you noticed, I never said bye bye #facebook. The reason for that is there's an outdoors community that just doesn't exist here in the #fediverse. I'm not sure if there's an answer for that... I mean, the Dark Peak walking community group I'm a member of has over 1000 members. here, there's me. I'm a lonely voice. What I have done is delete my old account and create a new one devoid of personal information. I share nothing personal about myself and post no personal photos. I simply use it for access to those communities that I'm a member of.

I'm also considering installing a small PeerTube instance so that I can migrate my few public videos away from YouTube.

I'm contemplating installing and having a dabble with Matrix.

I'm wondering if I could make use of Discourse.

I'm also looking at #Bitwarden password manager. More research needed on that one as - for obvious reasons - I'd need to be extremely sure of its security.

PixelFed also interests me. I've started an account on Pixelfex.social and would like to eventually host, but I'll probably wait until it's a bit more stable.

Few random questions running through my mind as I sit here watching my son play 'cut the rope'.

Is #pleroma #activitypub only or can it communicate with diaspora?

How does #friendica compare with #hubzilla in terms of resource usage... ie impact on system load. I'm thinking along the line of single user instances here.

Are there any tweaks that can be made to friendica to make it 'lighter' if only used as a single user instance?

Are friendica and hubzilla the only 2 systems that are capable of full communication with both diaspora and mastodon?

I have to admit, I've been tempted by the claims of being ultra lightweight by pleroma, but I wouldn't want to lose the ability to communicate with diaspora

#fediverse

Success! My #wordpress blog now has basic #activitypub support and should be available to follow at hillexplorer@hillexplorer.com

Adding the contact tested successfully with friendica and mastodon

On the day I said I hadn’t run into too many bots on Mastodon this one popped up spamming my timeline lol. At least it wasn’t false advertising what it was and I can block it and its entire domain (which I of course did)…just the serendipity of it is humorous to me…the bot itself I found idiotic not humorous meanwhile it has 200+ followers...ah the internet... #mastodon #fediverse

Just trying out a public instance of Pixelfed....

I'll hang fire until I install on my own server...hopefully they'll support mariadb in the future.

Fediverse Tools

After a few hours exploring the fediverse (0), I am amazed. People are developing great tools and they are doing it openly, ethically, and freely. There must be a fediverse education program waiting to be discovered. While Diaspora* is great for conversations and being "excellent" to each other in a quick, social way WriteFreely could be useful for writing well.

WriteFreely post default to anonymous drafts. And even after you transfer an anonymous draft post to a blog, you can still edit the post again. So if, like Barry Lane say, writing very well is re-writing very much, WriteFreely lets us follow good advice by providing a work flow with opportunities for re-writing.

I imagine that spending a couple hours getting used to markdown(1) would let writers be more productive than they could ever be in popular (by monopoly) word processors. The proprietary word processors and other(spreadsheet etcetera) software is bloated in more ways than one. In addition to expensive hardware requirements, all the menus and their changes from version to version take attention away from developing thought through writing. The Libre versions of Word Processors and Spreadsheets impress me but I just don't like Office Software. With markdown, ure there are limits to your ability to layout pictures and things, working within those limits might save time and attention span for crafting sentences, while still allowing for pictures and diagrams... (After easing into writing and markup to get a feel for its-all-text writers that need more control can advance into emacs org-mode and learn to have complete control over html output, or LaTex and have complete freedom to create Beautiful Documents (美文章 (3) )

It was fun to get PixelFed posts and a WriteFreely blog post to work together.(2) I don't like to clog up Diaspora* streams with an album, and then a post that uses the pictures from that album. It is possible to preview and album and get the image locations, and then use the image urls in the post's markdown, but the flow is awkward enough to be distracting. And I have lost posts and had to start all over again while doing that. Posting a few mini-albums to PixelFed and then using the urls from the safely uploaded photos for a WriteFreely post felt like a smoother workflow.

While writing, I'll have to remember to open up the social sites like Diaspora* and PixelFed in a browser that is not logged in. Notifications can derail a writing process..

I am so glad the #fediverse exists. It is so vibrant and alive these days. For all the bullshit and insanity here it feels human in a way that no capitalist run - ad supported - venture funded space ever has.

@Gargron Speaking of moderation tools: Do you believe it would make sense to have a system for users to report instance blocks they consider unfair or excessive to the admins of their instance? Some kind of voting system perhaps, where multiple users can express agreement or disagreement toward another instance? The thought occurred to me recently, as I can see this becoming an issue in terms of #censorship resistance as the #fediverse grows.

Tip for GPlus refugees coming to the Fediverse.

As a GPlus refugee I immediatly started comparing it with the new social network I migrated to and expected it to have G+ features. Does it have communities? Does it have collections? Why can't I edit my post? This attitude only led to disappointment while in the mean time I completely overlooked great features that the new social network had.

Now my tip is this. Take your time to look around in the new network, don't expect it to be like G+ but keep an open mind and judge it on it's own merits. After some time you'll find out that your new social network has it's own qualities that you start to care about and love.

@Gargron What if people choose to post on the #Fediverse first, and cross-post to Twitter?

🎉 New Year’s resolution: Become less dependent on services like Dropbox, Twitter, Google, etc. Use open, decentralised and/or self-hosted alternatives instead. First stop: #FEDIVERSE! Find me on 🐘 Mastodon: @sjockers https://vis.social/@sjockers

We will be testing :pixelfed: Stories next week.

We can't wait to bring ephemeral content to the fediverse!

Federation Testsuite

Currently the federated web holds 35 projects with 9 different protocols (source: the-federation.info) all trying to connect and communicate with each other. But does that actually work? Most of the projects do have unit testing but only for certain areas, like the front-end or the database, but the protocol itself isn't tested. Well it definitely works-on-my-machine but does it work on others too?

Here are the details of the first few calls made into the API on a “real” pod ever. Much more to come in the near future. #diaspora #diaspora-dev #fediverse

To have a prayer of sleeping I decided to document the steps of starting to use the API. This is relatively detailed look at the authentication process before discussing the first API calls made #diaspora #diaspora-dev #fediverse

Diaspora API Dev Progress Report 28 December 2018 TL;DR

Trying to archive my old data to really #deletefacebook as I try to move exclusively to #diaspora #mastodon and the #fediverse. Found some gotchas.

First post on my new blog, converted from #wordpress to #jekyll. Now on to getting some dev-test servers up so can keep going on #diaspora API dogfooding and doing other good work for the #fediverse

Diaspora API Dev Progress Report 21 December 2018 TL;DR
- Major coding is complete.
- A couple code reviews then the "real" review for integrating into the main development branch begins
- Standing up API test server, investigating client libraries, and a lot of the usual death by 1000 cuts up ahead :)

Please read the actual article for some expectation management of when this will be available and how. The bottom line is a maxim I quoted in the post: “The first 90% of the work takes the first 90% of the time and the last 10% takes another 90% of the time.”

*Interesting Interview with Jason Robinson of Socialhome social network - One of the Faces of the Federation *

I'm really interested in this type of discussion around how we can better federate social networking. It looks like some interesting things are going to be happening with Socialhome. Next in line is full support for the ActivityPub protocol, which means Socialhome will be able to federate with even more users through platforms like Mastodon.

Socialhome has a nice interface (a bit like Pinterest) but it still lacks like buttons, although you can reshare and comment.

See https://medium.com/we-distribute/faces-of-the-federation-jason-robinson-of-socialhome-7f6aa0b77915.

Yes I'm at Socialhome too at https://socialhome.network/u/danievdm/ but I'm trying to remember how I posted there 😉
