COVID Moonshot

In case you're running Folding@Home (and I hope you are!), this site is where a lot of candidate molecules are displayed that show the effect of activity calculated against coronavirus. You can see your contribution in real time!

I did a thing!

Made another raised bed to put in the yard. This one is going to grow lots of lettuce and other greens...hopefully. :-)
in reply to JB Carroll

and it was a good thing you did....I should do something like that.
in reply to Kenny Chaffin

Even with just a 1:1 mixture of compost:manure, most things did pretty well. Unfortunately we underestimated the affinity for a squash plant we started from a store-bought squash seed for the bed, it ended up dominating everything else:

Sorry for the direct mention, but I'm having trouble with Friendica groups. I can't see any posts except my own from a few months ago. I can still get feeds of people in my network timeline. I also left and then tried to re-add the Friendica Admins group, admins@forum.friendi.ca, but I can't seem to re-add it.

Was wondering if it was a weird database issue or if my nginx config is doing something weird again. I was having issues with redis recently so not sure if that's an issue. Thanks for any tips you have.

This is really strange. I re-followed the admins last night, but just checked again and I can see the latest post from Tio. So I guess it just took a while? I unfortunately can't see any previous post, but maybe that will populate over time. I'll wait a day or two and see if that works.

Okay. That's good to know if I need any other posts from the past! Maybe it was hung on on using a different protocol (I've followed the forum.friendi.ca groups ever since I started up my node. It seems like at least un-following and then re-adding the group restored communication.

Well it can't last forever. Pretty sure my desktop graphics card gave up the ghost today, and now my computer won't boot. Trying to scrape through eBay for a decent upgrade and found a 590x for a decent price. Hope that helps it boot back up! #hardware
in reply to JB Carroll

Thanks! My motherboard has the error code display built in, so I’m pretty sure it’s due to a graphics card firmware corruption issue.
in reply to JB Carroll

and if it's windows it won't boot if there are graphic issues....

In a sense, I like to think of it as humbling. :-)

Brave browser becomes first to support IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) protocol support. It is a decentralized, peer-to-peer protocol that allows people to access censored content in restrictive countries.

#friendica #admins , just a heads up.

dear follow #diasporians

i have the hint, there will soon come a wave of #maga - #trumpsters accounts to #diaspora, the older of you might remember on the #wave of #daesh - and #isis accounts yeras ago, when #twitter #silenced their accounts and i think, the #antifa -fellows here in diaspora , the diasporians who have no sympathy to trump or his #whitepower -footsoldiers, the people here, who dont sympathizes with #racism #fascism #homophobia #sexism or (yes, you read right, i wrote OR! which says a lot about this time) #antisemitism the #liberals here, we should be prepared and think about, how to counter that, i dont want diaspora to become the brown echochamber for #conspiracy-ideology, for that #qanon lunacy or this #trump -bullshit
share that, think about that, debate about that, stopping #fascism when you can, not, when its allready to late, #antifascists predicted that allready years ago and itz no #fun anymore, itz no fun, to play #cassanda and beeing right #now itz the time to defeat #fascist #hatespeech here on diaspora, not tomorow, not next week, ITZ NOW!

this is a call to your keyboards!

please share!

you get a funny, hopefully prophetic picture as reward

ps if you want to support the cause and you think i missed important points, feel free to rephrase that posting or write something in the comments or a pm, feel free to "follow"me (maybe a little warning, i am an antifa, i am really i left wing communist and i am a pro-zionist and i am a militant, we can argue about that, we can have debates or, if you dont like that, make your own post about it, if itz antifascist, i will support it, i love you!)

and thx for your concerns

Hoping we survive this attack by Y’all Qaeda.

Started off New Year’s Day with a large ice storm and our power being out for five hours, due to a tree on the power line. Because it’s a new year, I’m not going to try to read into how that bodes for 2021. :-)

http2 activate!

For some reason, I realized I didn't have http2 enabled on my #nginx server for #friendica. It's an easy fix, and now the page load seems very zippy, even compared to loading on my local connection before! #sysadmin

I have to admit I’ve used these apps quite a few times during the pandemic. I’m going to resolve to order direct from the restaurant and actually go and pick it up myself, and be less lazy about cooking, of course. :-)

Whoops!

Hope this gets out there. Decided on a whim to update from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 LTS. I guess because of the complexities of my server config, it totally messed up the boot and zfs mounting. On, the upside, it appears I have restored it to 20.04! #liveandlearn

Aw man, as if this year needed another reason to be terrible.

iSurf Social Registrations open again!

Hi all!

Well, with some of the bugfixes and improvements that have gone in with system cleanup and performance, I've been able to re-enable some cleanup settings. That, in turn, has led me to re-open registrations for new accounts here.

iOS Shortcut to record police interaction.

If you and/or someone you know use iOS, someone made a very handy Shortcut task to automatically record, notify a contact, and upload a video if you get pulled over. I just discovered Shortcuts on my iPhone, and seems like a very powerful way to program tasks.

iFixit is building a repair database for medical equipment, and it needs your help - A call for service manuals

Repair specialist iFixit is building a database filled with repair information for the world’s hospital equipment in anticipation of the increased demand caused by COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. In particular, it’s calling for repair manuals for ventilators and BiPAP machines that can be used as ventilators. iFixit’s database can be found here, and the company is calling for people to create new device pages and upload photographs and manuals.

The reasoning behind creating the database is simple: as the novel coronavirus spreads, the experience of Italian and Chinese hospitals suggests that the world’s supply of ventilators is going to be placed under huge stress, making it essential that these can be repaired quickly if and when they break down. This equipment will be an essential part of treating anyone who develops respiratory problems as a result of COVID-19.

Simulating Social Distancing

A great, visual article on the effect of various amounts of #socialdistancing on a virus like the one causing #COVID19 .

Help fight COVID-19!

Since I have some CPU cycles to spare on my personal server at home, I decided to contribute computational power to Folding@Home to help fight coronavirus. Thanks @Hank G for posting the article for the idea!

I encourage everyone to download Folding@Home in some fashion to help with computational power. They even have ones for Android, so if you have an old phone lying around you can use that too!
