We will mainly be posting about our garden but also pepper profiles for the ~50 varieties we grow and pictures of Big Aubs the pepper guard cat. During grow season, come see us at the Tuscaloosa River Market!
Looking forward to seeing more of the pepper community on Mastodon and connecting with other growers!

@ditol Terrific question! You can absolutely use your old profile, but it comes with a caveat.
Our suggested upgrade path is to go back and install/use the verrsion associated with your profile, then go through and upgrade to every major new version.
For example, if you last used that profile with Thunderbird 91, start with the last point release of that version, 91.13.1. Then keep checking for updates until you're upgraded to the latest version.
"If it’s convenient for you, we recommend installing the Thunderbird Flatpak from Flathub, which is now packaged and maintained by the Thunderbird team."
Fantastic, will switch over to the flatpak :)
Very cool. Looking forward to trying the new version. 👍
And will there finally be an Android app that actually works?
finally with a modernised interface; no more of that 1990’s/early 2000’s email client look.
I might try this out sometime later.

Why We're Rebuilding The Thunderbird Interface From Scratch
"Why does Thunderbird look so old, and why does it take so long to change?" Let's answer that burning question with some important history.Alessandro Castellani (The Thunderbird Blog)
I just tried out the new release and it's really slick! I'm definitely switching back to Thunderbird on desktop.
Now if there only was an iOS app...
3 weeks since I started to use #Thunderbird Supernova and I'm glad with the new appeareance and the workflow it promotes.
I'm still thinking: now that we have a spaces toolbar for main sections (mail, calendar, tasks, addresbook, chat), why still use tabs for them. IMO tabs should be used for content (messages, events, document previews...). I'm hidding the spaces toolbar because it seems redudant with spaces tabs, and I (still) can't disable tabs for spaces.
Anyway, I love TB

The only positive I can see coming from "Threads" is, that people are aware of Twitter alternatives and probably learn about Mastodon too. But most people on Facebook and Instagram don't care that is the company Facebook behind it. Therefore they would not care about Mastodon either. Or any other alternative similar to it, as there are not millions of people.
As for Threads, I think it will stay relevant. Will it take over Twitter? Maybe, probably not. They do not federate with Activity Pub, therefore it is not relevant to me. "Just" another service I don't care, similar to Tik Tok. And to be honest here, I would like them to federate.

If you look at my history, I’ve been trying to get some useful information regarding Threads, but have received much less useful comments than I would even receive on reddit.
Personally, I’d really like to access to Threads from my anonymous account on another instance, since Threads account is strictly tied to an Instagram account.
I guess it’s the nature of social media nowadays. Lots of noise, very little actual signal.

There's been lots of discussions about this already, but the short version is that this is a play book tactic used by big companies to take over a sector.
I didn't experience this at the time, so the details might be off, but one example, as I understand it, is what Google did with Google Messages a decade ago or so. They federated using some other service that existed before Activity Pub I think, and most casual users just flocked to it with no idea about any federation. Once it got big, they just stopped federating, and anyone who was not on Google Messages but had friends who were (which most did since GM was so popular) had to change to GM.
Other similar such things have happened before with other products and in other markets, and that's what people fear will happen with threads.

Except reddit or lemmy doesn’t have a big concept of persistent friends or connections.
Why would you care where some random moves to? I don’t know anyone here and no one knows me. That’s the beauty of it. That’s why it’s different than other platforms and past occurrences.
Technology reshared this.
You don't need the friends, that is just one example. You have to think of the general concept and logic; Lemmy, as well as kbin, have communities. If one place manages to secure all or most major communities, they can pull the same thing. And Threads is meant to be a Twitter replacement, so you do have the bit about connections, as well as influencers. It's like Mastodon, but completely centralized.
So the same logic applies: if Threads joins the Fediverse and most people go to Threads, then most users who are not on Threads will still end up having a lot of discussions on Threads and following a lot of people there. Then some day, once Threads gets big enough, it will stop federating and Fediverse users will be forced to move if they want to keep those connections. Meanwhile, Mastodon dies. Lemmy and kbin might survive because they fill a different niche; however, if instances start federating with Threads and making it possible to follow people on there, then the same exodus will happen.
We can learn from history, or we can let it repeat itself. Federating with Threads would mean a huge failure to learn from history. And then maybe ten years later you'll be the one trying to warn someone else as they tell you how that time it's totally different.

I agree that it’s a direct threat to Mastodon. I disagree same will happen to Lemmy and Kbin. I don’t see Threats ever becoming a anonymity oriented platform. It’s tied to an Instagram account.
Even if they support it in the future, just like Twitter and Mastodon, the primary users will be real identities. That goes directly against the concept of Lemmy and Kbin.
Not everything fits the same paradigm. We can keep parroting the history just for the sake of it or we can adapt and see that things evolve over time.

On the technical side they had over ~~1~~ 30 million accounts register in 24 hours. The ~~site~~ service didn't crash. That's impressive.

Hey, friends.
It’s been a while. Roughly about two years, in fact. A lot has happened since our publication last put anything out. I’m going to get into the how and why in a minute, but the important thing is: we’re back. This project is alive again, publishing some of the only journalism around dedicated solely to the Fediverse.
I’ll be honest: writing articles on a consistent schedule is hard. We Distribute has historically operated as a free publication, available to everybody. That isn’t going to change, but the reality is that the burnout that afflicted me over the past few years made it difficult to keep contributing. I had to step away from doing this for a while, but I was also the main person running it.
I can’t run this thing by myself. Which is why I’m reaching out to the community at large to see if we can build something truly great together.
There are a number of ways that you can support our efforts: we need insight from experts within the community. We need writers who can cover different parts of a network that’s growing in every direction. We need funds to keep the lights running. And finally, we need readers who want to share our work around the network.
We’re taking everything that made the old We Distribute great, and making it bigger and better than ever before. We’re going beyond just writing about the tech, and focusing on the people building it, the issues that come up, and the culture that’s developed.
I’m excited to be finally doing this, after such a long period of recovery and rebuilding. I can’t wait to share what we’ve been cooking up.

@shipp The factory images, over-the-air updates and Android Open Source Project branches/tags were fully published around 12 hours ago.
They time it to happen when the shipped devices are meant to begin arriving, but some people often receive it a day earlier so the approach is a bit imperfect.
@amongthieves A lot of the support for that form factor isn't included in the Android Open Source Project and it would be a huge project to support it. We have no plans to implement it.
We plan to support the Pixel Fold but it will likely be significantly more difficult than supporting the Pixel Tablet. Supporting the tablet will make it easier to support the Pixel Fold to an extent, and it will be much easier to support future tablets and folding devices whether or not they are Pixels.

Relaunching a Fediverse News Publication - Writers Wanted
Hi everybody,
We Distribute (wedistribute.org) is a ongoing passion project of mine. It's the first news publication of its kind: a journal about free, open, decentralized technologies, that just so happens to also be a federated blog. People from all over the fediverse can like, subscribe, boost, and reply, and their interactions carry over onto the site itself.
This project has existed in one incarnation or another for nearly a decade. It's been dormant for the last year or so due to personal health issues, data loss, and the dissolution of the parent organization overseeing it, FENEAS.org.
After putting a lot of legwork in, I've managed to rebuild it, recovering about 98% of all of the articles written over the years. It's due for official launch in a few weeks, but I want to start off on the right foot this time. The network is growing at an unprecedented rate, and there's a lot of ground to cover.
We Distribute has historically been a one-man operation, but I can't do that anymore. It's a volunteer project, that does not serve ads or paywalls of any kind. I'm looking for writers who are passionate about the fediverse, and interested in an opportunity to be the first to break news to a network consisting of thousands of servers and potentially millions of people.
We cover news, feature updates, opinion pieces, bits of history, culture beats, and interviews with the people who are making this thing happen.
If you're interested in being a part of this project, please DM me here, or at my main: @deadsuperhero@social.treehouse.systems
