@howrd Similar here - I've gone from "what is this?" to learning and using LLMs for a variety of purposes all day every day - work uses them, web-development in the evenings uses them, personal passion coding projects wouldn't happen without them. I use a mix of local models whenever possible and cloud-based when needed.
But one thing I absolutely hate is being reduced to a shovel carrying slop💩from one person to another.

Chat with, never, it’s nothing but a robot (*edit: aside from shit customer service experiences). Use for work, daily. It’s a tool for analysis, summation, baseline work, etc. None of the output is ready for public facing use, it *always* requires discernment, review and adjustment, but the square-one productivity lift is real. Unfortunately the industry of AI is generally a cesspool of unparalleled douchebaggery.

I have a paid Kagi account, which gives you exquisite control over just where you want your results from, lets you put in custom CSS to remove all hints of AI from the result page - really neat, but I think it uses about 0.01% of the Internet as its search space. I'd say about 50% of any technical searches I do I'll get a "nothing found", then try on Google with UDM and get immediate, accurate hits - this is for part numbers, user manuals, like that
Bing and Duck Duck are as bad as Kagi, but without the customization options.
Certainly, if you can do without Google, that's the best option - I'm sure Kagi will get there in time.

DDG works for me. Haven't tried Kagi, I guess I don't see any need for it. DDG also keeps out AI and doesn't offer me any AI summaries.

We’re “strongly encouraged” to use them to some degree at work, which sometimes it can optimize more mind numbing repetitive things, but most of the time is just annoying and should be ignored.
Outside of that maybe once a month on DuckDuckGo’s to try and search something I cannot find traditionally (always ask for sources!).
almost daily I pose questions as in a search engine and walk away with (or discard) the answer. Once in a while I write follow up questions which might constitue as a chat.

For personal use, almost zero amount. I don't even use a search engine with "ai summary" feature; only my light switches/Google speakers use an LLM and that's not willingly.
For work, all the time. Literally everything I do is expected to go through Claude. Code, reviews, slack messages, emails, all Claude.
for me, "chat with LLM" consists of me searching for how to do something using Bing (yes, I know), then the AI answer gives me a full script to do it and asks "if you'd like, I can generate a script that does that and also does this," and I'll be like "yes" and have it generate that script. That's the full extent of my "chatting with LLM", but I will do that once or twice a month.
There is no ethical use of AI.

Mine are primarily for helping me set up certain things and create scripts. As someone who has tried many times and failed many times at attempting to be able to focus deep enough for a long enough period of time to understand how the logic of programming and scripting works, I appreciate the ability to learn by example and see what works and what doesn't.

the "not at all" is very high. I'm most interested in knowing if that is because I tried it (recently) and it’s not useful to me, or I refuse to try it, or its very useful but I refuse to use it...
Out of our own volition - zero.
When we were trying to get to a technician when our internet was constantly disconnecting in the afternoon (but we knew why - dowstream signal level on the edge of stable values due to high temperatures and coax increasing attenuation as the temperature raised) - few hours across a span of a week trying to make the LLM chatbot finally pass us over to a human being and not spit out the same useless shit (just worded differently). Once we actually got to the technician, the problems were resolved within ~10 minutes, downstream singal no longer sitting at -12 dBmV at some channels.
Our contract with this internet provider ends within 2 months and we'll be switching them for a smaller one, one which still seems to have human beings at support instead of a recorded message when you call them and is pushing you to an useless LLM chatbot.
@foxes When we first got broadband internet here, tech came in, connected everything up, got no internet. Checked signal levels: all low. He went to his van, went through large paper maps of their cable network, then drove off.
45 minutes later, he returned, restarted everything, and we had internet.
He'd had to drive all over the place, tweaking signals at various places, to make it work.
When we see a tech in our area, we worry if our connection will go down so another's works!

Behind my parents' house is a thick sheaf of plain old telephone cables hanging on poles. Copper wires in pairs used to connect to POTS phones.
For decades, there was one or more bad pairs in that sheaf. So if your phone service went out, their tech would come, dig into the cable sheaf, and change you to a different pair until they got one that worked.
Maybe not still true, but who knows!

I think my answer last time was I might have unwittingly used one for a service who's chat support window didn't disclose it. Willingly and knowingly? Not for probably two years at this point. I did once in a blue moon in 2023 and 2024 to see if shit really was as dangerous as people made it out to be and decided it wasn't worth the other issues I would be complacent in if I kept doing that.

But the hyper-mediation through ‘chat’ is being forced upon us. I want search and the need for research from sources.

@stardust the very best approach I could offer is "what is your definition of a chat in the general sense?" and putting that in words. then semantically use that.
why I consider it the best approach is that although it compromises strict uniformity of the answer data set it has the more significant benefit of including and using individuals' own definitions of words, which makes the resulting answer data set more honest and is more inclusive of diverse contexts.

I never “chat” with LLMs. But I do sometimes make requests of them. My workplace’s internal AI system labels any interaction a chat, so I counted the multiple times a week I say, “list all the text in this image.”

It's not terribly difficult, honest!
Browsers have a sort of app store for adding features, that has a search function - search for UDM.
Install that, follow the instructions it provides.
Under browser settings, you can pick which search engines get shown - turn on UDM, turn off Google. Make UDM the default, and away you go.
I would position myself in the gap between multiple times per week and more than 1 hour per day. The gap between those two possible answers is too big. "A few times per day" would be a good further option. (And I know that you can't change the options anymore.)

@colinstu if you read through the comments a lot of people have given that context as a comment to supplement their datum. and consider the stats: not all jobs are in software development where that mandate seems mostly to exist, although there is a high proportion of people who work in it on fediverse. so the proportion feels about right to me.
the results are consistent and similar to the 3 months prior poll we did asking this same question, which is another marker of authentic answers.

I suppose my old #wifi PCI-E adapter on my desktop shot craps. Worked up the gumption to run ethernet to that that and my TV. Speed on the desktop went from 4 Mbps down to 878 Mbps! 🤯 #firstworldjoys

I'm an analytical chemist. I've hosted my own #Friendica node (instance) at my home since 2018, shortly after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. From there, I got bit by the #selfhosting bug and am now hosting my own #opensource replacements for many FAANG services.
